`1. Vedic Tradition
The Meaning of Jyotish - science of Dharma
Jyotish is also known as Vedic Astrology.
The term "Jyotish" comes from the Sanskrit word "Jyoti," meaning light, and "Isha," meaning God, so it is called a "science of light"
The modern Jyotish Astrology came to us from Hindu philosophic tradition, but it's roots extend far beyond Hinduism, dating back to ancient Vedic times (approximately 1500 BCE).
What are The Vedas then ?
The Vedas are ancient hymns or poems - the most ancient written texts from which many philosophical traditions trace their roots.
Written in Sanskrit, the Vedas use a complex linguistic structure where each word can hold multiple meanings. Sanskrit is a musical language where pronunciation plays a key role, which is why these hymns are chanted rather than simply read.
The Vedas are considered Śruti (that which is heard), meaning they were not authored by humans but rather "heard" by Rishis in deep meditative states.
NadaBrahma - is the Vedic concept, which we can translate as "The God is Sound", "The World is Sound", "The Sound is Divine"
The Rishis were the ancient sages but also seers of divine sound—those who perceived the primordial vibrations of the universe and translated them into sacred knowledge, and shared it through mantrans and hymns, which we know as Vedas:
They accessed Nada, the subtle sound vibrations beyond ordinary perception.
Mantras and Vedic hymns were not "invented" but "heard" through deep inner stillness.
Their bodies and minds acted as fine-tuned instruments to resonate with cosmic frequencies.
Jyotish Astrology is a science, which derived from the interpretations of the Vedas.
The Jyotish Astrology is also a symbolical language in which Vedas are written.
Jyotish astrology is one of the six Vedangas (ancillary disciplines which are rooted in Vedas and required to be comprehended to understood the Vedas itself. )
So understanding terminology and symbolism of Jyotish Astrology is the key to understand and interpret the Vedas. Houses, Planets, Constellations etc. is the vocabulary of this symbolical language.
And understanding how to interpret various combination of planets, which we call is the grammar of this language.
The Evolution of Vedic thought
The next philosophical texts which emerged from the Vedic Tradition are Upanishads.
The also called Vedanta ("The end of the Vedas").
The Vedas laid the groundwork for Hinduism, which evolved over time into a highly diverse and complex religious tradition. The Vedic deities, rituals, and hymns formed the basis of later Hindu worship practices.
The Puranic concept of Hinduism evolved later on from Upanishads and familiar to us through Puranic deities as: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. It came to us through epic stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata and the love stories of Gita Govinda.
Ayurveda stretches her roots from The Vedas as well - Atharvaveda, laid the foundation for this knowledge.
Ayurveda is often known as the Indian medical system, but in reality, it is a "life-style"—one that helps you understand your body on a deeper level. Think of it as a user manual for your unique physical being. When you align with your body's natural design, you learn how to cultivate energy, prevent illness, and eliminate the need for external medicine. True healing comes from food, daily routines, and balance. Sickness is merely a sign of disharmony within the body's perfect system. By exploring our ideal lifestyle, we move closer to a state of equilibrium and well-being.
Ayurveda and Jyotish Astrology are very intertwined disciplines. We can learn a lot about current sickness of the person through the natal chart of this native. Ayurveda gives remedies by removing imbalances, or in another words by balancing a life-style. Any ayurvedic doctor has a grasp of foundations of Jyotish Astrology.
The Vedic chants, or Sama Veda hymns, laid the foundation for Indian music. The rhythmic chanting of the Vedas influenced the development of classical Indian music and mantra chanting traditions, which are still practiced today.
The Six Classical Schools of Indian Philosophy
The metaphysical and philosophical explorations in the Vedas and Upanishads led to the rise of the six classical schools of Indian philosophy:
1. Nyaya – School of logic and epistemology
2. Vaisheshika – School of atomism and metaphysics
3. Samkhya – Dualistic philosophy of consciousness and matter
4. Yoga – Philosophy of meditation and self-discipline
5. Mimamsa – Ritualistic and interpretative school focused on the Vedas
6. Vedanta – Non-dualistic or theistic interpretations of the Upanishads
Yoga and Vedanta are most familiar to us concepts, I believe from this 6 above.
Many modern philosophers are referencing to Vedas in one way or another, such as Terence McKenna or Joseph Campbell for example.
Tantra: A Divergence from Ascetism
Another familiar concept to us which evolved from Vedas is Tantra.
In contrast with dualistic philosophy of Samkhya, which favored ascetic practices and emphasised spirit over matter - Tantra emerged as a divergence from mainstream spiritual practices by embracing the material world rather than renouncing it, aiming to use everyday experiences and energies (including sexuality) for spiritual growth.
Vedic texts and rituals influenced Tantra, particularly in its focus on sacred mantras, ritual practices, and the use of symbolic language.
The main concepts of Tantra are:
- Unity of Opposites. It is the fundamental idea of Tantra - union of opposites, particularly union of male and female principles. Same idea we can see in Taoist concept of Yin & Yang. This male and female principles are represented as Shiva (divine masculine) & Shakti (divine feminine) in Tantra. These forces represent the dynamic interplay of creation and destruction, spirit and matter, and consciousness and energy.
Tantric practices aim to harmonize these dualities within the individual.
- Non-Dualism: Tantra holds a non-dualistic worldview, where all aspects of existence—both material and spiritual—are seen as sacred and interconnected.
- Shakti ( Kundalini): In Tantra, Shakti (the feminine energy) is revered as the ultimate creative force of the universe.
- Body as a Sacred Temple: The body is not viewed as something to be transcended or denied but rather as a sacred vessel for spiritual growth.
Yogic practices and ayurveda are used to build up and maintain this temple. Your energy level is represented by planet Mars in your natal chart, and your natal chart is guide as well of how to maintain it. So all of this disciplines are very intertwined.
Definitions of Jyotish Astrology`
Jyotish as Vedic Psychology
The most simplest definition would be Vedic Astrology = Vedic Psychology.
And the Vedic Psychology is very similar to the knowledge which was re-discovered by Z. Freud and C. Jung recently, namely science about our Individuation and Purpose.
The Key concept of Individuation by Carl Jung is The Self as the Center. And it is not a goal, but a journey.
Same a Natal Chart in Jyotish Astrology is deemed a roadmap on this Journey of Self- Realization.
Lunar Astrology - The Importance of the Moon in Jyotish.
Moon is a symbol of our sub-consciousness in astrological language. Also emotions, intuition and inspiration.
Jyotish is also called a Lunar Astrology, because of the great emphasis which is given to Moon.
Moon is like the filter or lens through which we perceive the reality.
And the most important is that - Moon is responsilble four our state of Hapinnes.
On the contrary understanding our Moon, we can have insights into how our childhood trauams are influencing our destructive irrational behavior, self-sabotage, drama and so on.
Through special chart, which is called Chandra Lagna - we can connect with our deep desires.
Jyotish concept of Nakshatras (Lunar Mansions ) gives us insights into sexual compatibility and our behaviour pattern in social structures. This behaviour patterns again could be beneficial or destructive depending on the circumstances and being aware of them is crucial for success and self-realisation.
"A demon named is a demon half-defeated." - Buddhism aphorism.
Dharma Vs Adharma: Psychological Alignment
Dharma: The path of self-realization, Individuation, or Tao
Adharma: The psychological state of neurosis, or straying from one's true purpose
If we can call a realization of the Self, as Individuation as Carl Jung named it, or Dharma which means Purpose or Duty according to Vedic concept.
According to Carl Jung this process is crucial for for achieving psychological maturity and spiritual fulfilment.
And then we can call a severe Neurosis as Adharma.
Adharma literally means "Not following own Purpose" literally "against Dharma"
My teacher Kali Shankar was always saying : "Adharma will cost you!"
Jung's Perspective on Neurosis
So what is actually a Neurosis according to the founder of this term Carl Jung?:
- Signal of Disharmony: For Jung, neurosis is not merely a disorder but rather a symptom or signal that something in the person's psyche is out of balance. It often indicates that the individual's conscious attitudes or ways of living are misaligned with deeper unconscious needs or desires.
- Blocked Individuation: Neurosis often arises when a person resists or fails to integrate important aspects of their unconscious. This resistance can manifest as anxiety, depression, or obsessive behaviors because the unconscious is attempting to communicate something to the conscious mind that is being ignored or suppressed.
- Relational Aspect: Jung emphasized that neurosis can also be related to a conflict between the individual and their external environment, particularly social roles or expectations that conflict with their true self. In this sense, the conflict is not just within the person but between the person and society.
What Prevents People of Following Their Path ?
Why are we not following our Path then ?
Well, first step is a realization of the idea that there is A Path.
Life-Purpose, Self- Realization, Individuation, Dharma, Tao - you name it...
Everyone has an unique individual Purpose.
Jyotish Astrology is a science and tool for discovering one's purpose in life.
Natal Chart serves as representation of your Sub-Personalities.
And here the most interesting begins...
Your Mind As Mount Olympus
You can imagine your sub-consciousness as a mount Olympus - abode of the beautiful gods and goddesses. You as a Zeus or Indra ( Vedic analogue of Zeus ) is a Consciousness. You are the Ruler of your Mind. So all the inhabitatants of your Kingdom of mount Olympus are your sub - personalities. You can imagine all this beautifull charechters and what are they doing.
According to the mythological tales- they most of the time fight each other or having sex with each other. And this is how our psyche looks like. What Freud and Vedic concept would agree upon is that we are all caught on the hook of sex.
So we can clearly imagine that every charachter has it's own goals and desires.
But how does your kingdom looks in this case? If they push and pull in each and every direction?
If you are too strict and suppress too much - it could lead to illness on the physical level, because energy can't just disappear according to law of conservation of energy. Unmanifested energy is turned into sickness.
Or if you let the things slide - it could become overwhelming and full chaos.
We can call a Purpose as an alignment all of your sub-personalities for the same goal.
We find a purpose and direction for each of this energies, thus we feel a fulfilment, realization and happiness.
Because each of us wants to be happy and have appreciation for our skills and talents.
There are some people who think (like me before) that they don't have any special skills and talents.
So we are coming to another point in the topic - what doesn't allow us to follow our Path:
False beliefs & Blocks
Low self-esteem.
Traumas
Procrastination
Ignorance
So you can see from this example:
It's not the planets who block your realisation, but you and your ignorance to your own nature.
There are some lucky people, who can instantly feel their Way and navigate easily.
And there are some - who may find themselves struggling even to find this way?
This can happen for many reasons and again natal chart can give us more insights to dig in into particular aspects, but the most common we can call as:
- Childhood traumas. We all have them - in one way or another, but some of them can lead to serious blocks in latter stages of life. Our parents are our first teachers, and initiators to life and we copy-past their behavior very heavily. Eventually this behavior may have beneficial aspects for our own realization, or destructive. Obviously beneficials aspects can enhance our realization and in most destructive cases the individual may remain an infant for whole life, not gaining psychological maturity and not even tapping for the ways of its own realization.
- False beliefs. Any superficials beliefs which are not comming from our own core. So you can imagine - there are a lot of them, false beliefs from you parents, teachers, figures of authority and so on. There are obviously a lot destructive beliefs which we can accept. (Like money are evil for example). But even some beliefs which were beneficial for you parents, may not be beneficial for you. Because the concept of Individuation is the discovery of SELF, and what is good for YOU. What is why in many cases hard-reset of system is required. You may need to clear the Path, before allowing something new to grow.
- Low self-esteem. We all come in this world with some pre-designed value of self-esteem, which we may call genetical and which is represented by Sun in our natal chart. Again this value may be influenced in beneficial or destructive way through our upbringing, education and so on. Magic is that Jyotish Astrology shows how you can directly impact your self-esteem., meaning you can design a specific coaching for yourself or understand what type of coaching suits you better.
Alligning our sub-personalities may sound easy but we know that gods of Olympus
independent and often embroiled in their own conflicts, but they did come together in unity on certain significant occasions, like The Titanomachy: The gods of Olympus united to overthrow the Titans in a war known as the Titanomachy.
This was a defining battle in Greek mythology, where Zeus led the younger Olympian gods against the ruling Titans, including his father, Cronus.
Same idea we can trace in Vedas as a constant tension between Devas and Asuras.
This stories demonstrate that unity of Gods is possible on a very unique occasions.
The Devas or Gods - are your sub-personalities. Your thoughs, your ideas.
The Asuras or the demons - are the circumstances.
And as you know the circumstances are always stronger.
In the Vedic mythology we even have a story then Devas and Asuras work together: The Samudra Manthana: "Churning of the ocean", from where an elixir of eternal life - Amrita was born.
How we can apply this mythological examples in daily life?
Say, you want to start a project. Any project that will reshape your life - it could be a career change, start a business or go travelling alone. But, you have the bills to pay, you used to stability that your current job gives to you, and there are a lot of unknown variables if you want to start a business, plus you need to support your parents and you can't take any of such risks.
So your circumstances are holding you still, like an iron boot. These are your demons.
On top of that your sub-personalities are pulling you to many directions. These are your ideas, waiting to be manifested.
Eventually, you don’t have a goal strong enough to believe in—one that forces you to get up and work for it every day.
A goal that will allow you to overthrow your circumstances, just as Zeus crushed the Titans.
And you accept the fate and the circumstances... Understand that I am not saying supporting your parents is bad, but you need to break free from the routine that is preventing you from growing. Magic happens when you embrace the fear of the unknown, you try and you accomplish. You feel the burst of the dopamine. You are the King(or Queen). And you come back to your previous circumstances, but as a transformed version of yourself. Now you can give, not out of obligation, but from a state of resourcefulness.
Jyotish Astrology is the science, which we use to exactly this purpose - to find a goal, which will allign all your subpesonalities in same direction. The goal which will force you to move.
You can read more about it here.
"Memento mori, carpe diem" - Remember death, seize the day.
When we are get stuck in our routine, we used to think that we still have a lot of time.
But truth is that we are all mortal, and we can face a death someday, maybe even tommorow. People who feeled the death very closed, undergone through very transformative experience. You don't need that much extreme experience to remember that we have that much of this life, and every day is precious.
The Law of Entropy.
Entropy is disorder → In any system, things naturally move from order to chaos unless energy is added to maintain structure.
Another way to explain, how the Asuras ( Circumstances ) are always stronger, if you consciously don't put an energy to break out from the routine which is not serving you, chaos, entropy and eventually death absorbs you.
Jyotish Astrology has nothing to do with those, who gave up and accepting the fate, and what society wants them to do. Jyotish Astrology is for those who want to take authorship of their lives.
Mistakes are the only source of truth - Dan Koe.
We afraid to make a mistakes. We afraid of what people or friends will think of us (remember your demons). But if you read strories of successfull people, you would know that they have tried and failed hundreds of times before they actually arrived to something.
If you don’t allow yourself to make mistakes, you don’t allow your sub-personalities to develop and grow.
Imagine that you did wanted to live a nomadic life-stlye for example, but didn't allowed for yourself for several years. When you tried, you understood that it's not exactly what you are looking for. But what about the time you spent in the thinking process? And what would happen if you never try ?
Embrace mistakes, like the only true teacher tailored for your specific life situation.
Concept of Purpose
Each human is radically unique. This uniqueness is inscribed in us in three ways - the one-of-a kind configuration of our DNA (which is also represented by our Natal Chart), the particular way our brains are wired, and our experience as we go through life, experiences that are unlike any others. Consider this uniqueness as a seed that is planted at birth, with potential growth. And this uniqueness has a Purpose.
In nature, in a thriving ecosystem we can observe a high level of diversity among species. With this diverse species operating in a balance, the system is rich and feeds off itself, creating newer species and more interrelationships.
We humans operate in our own cultural ecosystem. Throughout history we can see that the healthiest and most celebrated cultures have been ones that encouraged and exploited the greatest internal diversity among individuals - ancient Athens, the Chinese Sung Dynasty, the Italian Renaissance. We can contrast this with the conformity and cultural sterility in dictatorships.
By bringing our uniqueness to flower in the course of our life, through our particular skills and specific nature of our work, we contribute our share to this needed diversity. Our Purpose is contribution to the Universal Mosaic of Creation. If you don't allow it to manifest - you work against your own Nature, against the Universal Plan of Creation - and from here all the illness and suffering are come from - not accepting yourself and your Nature.
How we can explain why we are drawn to music, or to helping other people or animals, or to particular form of knowledge or to sharing the knowledge?
Striving to connect to and cultivate this uniqueness provides us path to follow, an internal guidance system through life.
There few ways to connect to this system:
1) Normally the signs of this uniqueness are clearer to us in the early childhood, so we can remember to what we were attracted to
2) Our Natal Chart of Jyotish Astrology - represents matrix of our individual Purpose, which may be viewed in very details, and our Path even if already known and accepted - may be expanded and developed. For example, we already aware of different sub-personalities, but with help of Jyotish we can see and understand how they are connected in our unique way.
The path does not require that we follow one simple line, or that our inclination be narrowly focused. Perhaps we feel the pull of several type of knowledge. Our path involves mastering a variety of skills and combining them in highly inventive an creative ways.
When we activate our internal guidance system, the negative emotions that arise from aimlessness are neutralized—or even transformed into positive forces. Boredom is replaced by focus as we acquire new skills, driven by both fascination and an awareness of future benefits. This focus gains momentum, and soon, we find ourselves deeply immersed in our work.
At times, we may reach a state similar to the dissolution of the ego—a profound absorption where we become one with our work.
With a sense of purpose, insecurity fades. We feel that we are progressing, unlocking more of our potential. Anxiety and stress, rather than overwhelming us, can be channeled into productive energy.
The bigger picture of how far we need to go may seem daunting. However, by mastering a crucial life skill—setting small, achievable goals while maintaining a sense of urgency without paralysis—we can advance remarkably far. As human beings, we have a high tolerance for stress and, in fact, often thrive on it. Our restless, energetic minds function best when we are mentally and physically engaged, with adrenaline fueling our drive. Learning how to manage stress not only enhances resilience but can also improve our overall well-being.
A strong sense of purpose makes us less susceptible to depression. Low moments are inevitable—even necessary—because they can serve as creative incubators. But in general, we rise above the pettiness of daily life. We are on a Mission, contributing to something greater than ourselves, and in doing so, we elevate our existence.
