Upaya - Means of Correction in Jyotish

ree

Psychology

Upaya literally translated as "method", "solution" or "correction"We can say that upayas are means of correction aimed to correct imbalance and restore balance.

What is balance ? We all do have the strengths and the weaknesses. Though we all arise from the same One, each of us is very unique. We can go on for a while without noticing our weaknesses, but in the end, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. For example, lack of discipline could result in poor eating habits, which in turn could affect our physical health, manifested as illnesses of various kinds (sugar->caries). Hence, discipline would be an upaya for every Mars. We can call it a generic upaya. Every graha has it's generic upayas: Mercury - more reading; Jupiter - more learning; Venus - shopping or spa day.

And we also design a specific upaya on each individual basis. We are all different. My Mars in located in 12th House in Leo, but your will be somewhere else.So it is already a different Mars. Because my Mars is in Fiery sign, which makes it more powerful than Mars located in Cancer (Watery sign) Then my Mars, because it is located in Leo - it is ruled by Sun. Leo is owned by Sun. So Sun is dispositor of my Mars. Everything what is happening with the Sun would be reflected on my Mars. Then Mars located in 12th House is very different from the Mars, which is located in 7th House.

Classical Jyotish texts are giving such Upayas:

Weak Jupiter - charity on Thursdays, Guru-sevā, Vishnu worship and feeding the poor for Saturn.

But these were written more than thousand years ago, but the world is changing every moment and this upayas must be adapted for modern time as well.

Hence, we can call that reading good-detective would beneficial for Mercury, which is responsible for analytics, logic and IT.

For example, generic Upaya for Moon is contact with water. But for a person who has Moon in 4th House it is better to live near the water, on the contrary if this person would be living far from the water his or her emotional state might be more difficult to stabilise. For Jupiter for example, not only learning, but also a teaching would be great upaya. When you transmit the knowledge, this is the way actually you learn it.

Why at all should we know this ? For example, you have very powerful Mars, say in Sagittarius. Sagittarius in a fiery sign, so the Mars becomes there very powerful. However, your Mars is ruled by Jupiter which is debilitated (Capricorn). So in this case full potential of Mars can not be realised, if Jupiter is weak. Normally, we are lazy to use the qualities of the planet, which is debilitated or weak. That's why we need awareness to consciously overcome this.

Gemstones

In the Jyotish tradition, each planet has its own color spectrum, frequency, and

vibration. Minerals are crystalline structures, and each crystal resonates only with specific frequenciesMore about crystalline structures and resonance, you can read in my book.

A gemstone works through light (photons). That's why every planet has it's specific gemstone, which has a very distinctive colour and structure.

These are:

Human Hand with Gemstones - Jyotish
Jyotish - Gemstones
  • Sun - Ruby - Ring finger (right hand)

Confidence, leadership, focus, self-esteem

  • Moon - Pearl - Little finger

Emotions, Intuition

  • Mars - Red Coral - Ring finger (right hand)

Courage, Discipline

  • Mercury - Emerald - Little finger (right hand)

Intellect, Communication, Logic

  • Venus - Diamond - Middle finger (right hand)

Self-care, beauty, creativity

  • Jupiter - Yellow Sapphire - Index finger (right hand)

Growth, Wealth

  • Saturn - Blue Sapphire - Middle finger (right hand)

Only recommended if Saturn is lagnesha (ruler of the lagna (1st House)) or yogakāraka.

Each crystalline lattice allows only certain wavelengths to pass through.

The body converts photonic energy into biochemical reactions. This results in a subtle rebalancing of hormones and emotions. This is subtle, but it gradually reshapes the psyche and behavior.

A gemstone functions like a permanent yantra.

A yantra is a geometrical form that structures the mind and the space around it.

A crystal is a natural yantra, created by nature itself. A gemstone forms a constant pattern of energy. This pattern interacts with a person’s field through the skin, that is why it is important that gemstone actually touched the skin.

Stone is amplifier. It raises the planetary energy to a level where a person can actually use it(emerald makes Mercury’s mind clearer and more focused).

Important: A gemstone amplifies the nature of the planet itself. If the planet is harmful, the stone will amplify the harm.

We call planet harmful when it rules so called "bad" houses - 3rd, 6th, 8th, 12th - dusthanas.

Therefore, gemstones are chosen only after analyzing the birth chart.

The subtle bodies of a person are a system of vibrational layers.

Prana moves through the nadis, the mind and emotions are vibrational fields, the chakras are nodes that process energy. A graha (planet) in the horoscope is a vibrational pattern that manifests in the psyche and the body. If a planet has weak dignity ( debilitated, lord in debilitation, in an enemy sign ), its “frequency” in a person’s field becomes unstable.A gemstone provides a stable resonator that strengthens this channel.

A gemstone does not “do the work for you.”It creates the conditions in which a person’s inner energy begins to unfold.

Mantra

Jyotish is called Vedanga (a discipline which is required to comprehend the Vedas)

along with Shiksha (Sound & Pitch) & Chandas (Meter & Rhythm ).

Mantras are vibrational codes, designed for a specific influence on our physical or energy body. We are all consists of vibrations, our cells, nerves - everything vibrates. By law of the resonance, everything that vibrates response to vibrations.

"The human voice, used in the right way, becomes a magnet of healing power. Its resonance can restore the rhythm of the body and the clarity of the mind" - Inayat Khan

From Yogic and Tantric tradition every chakra is connected to a specific bija-mantra (seed-mantra), which is one-syllable mantra. Every chakra also resonates with particular gland and nerve plexus. Hence, chakras act as sound interface for our body.

Each gland vibrates within a frequency band corresponding to its chakra. The chakra acts as the energetic software, while the gland is the hardware that translates vibration into hormones and physiological responses.

You can also learn more about the healing properties of the sound in my book here.

In Vedic thought, the universe manifests through Śabda (sound).

Your body is not something separate from sound; it is sound slowed down into visible geometry and biological rhythm.

The 72,000 nāḍīs (subtle energy channels) function like strings of an inner instrument.

Prāṇa flows through them in wave-like pulsations - called spanda in Kashmir Shaivism.

Prana is a universal energy, every energy is vibration. These currents hum continuously with minute tonal frequencies, maintaining cellular coherence.

When the flow becomes blocked, the sound pattern is distorted - leading to disease.

That’s why mantra japa (repetition) or nāda yoga is seen as energetic tuning, restoring harmony to the body’s vibrational code.

Sanskrit syllables are not arbitrary: they’re vibrational archetypes defined by their place of

articulation and breath dynamics.

George Fuerstein about Sanskrit:

"According to tradition, it is the language of the gods - deva-vāṇī. The script itself is known as deva-nāgarī (city of gods), which hints at the Tantric (and Vedic) notion that each letter of the alphabet represents a particular type of fundamental energy, or deity power. Together these matrix energies weave the web of cosmic and hence also bodily existence. Here we have again the idea, quintessential to Tantra, that the microcosm mirrors the macrocosm. The body and the universe at large are produced by the same energy equations that the Tantrics have expressed in the form of the fifty principal sounds of the Sanskrit alphabet, which was developed in the context of spiritual practice and sacred vision."

Each bīja mantra stimulates micro-vibrations in the tissues around the corresponding gland. When chanted correctly (intonation, rhythm, awareness), the vibration:

So chanting “Ram” energizes the solar plexus and pancreas; “Ham” clears the throat and thyroid; “Om” synchronizes pituitary–pineal alignment.

Just as the chakras ascend from dense to subtle, the endocrine system moves from survival to transcendence:

  • Lower chakras → Physical survival and reproduction (adrenal, gonadal)

  • Middle chakras → Emotional and relational balance, fulfilling of desires (pancreas, thymus)

  • Upper chakras → Mental and spiritual awareness (thyroid, pituitary, pineal)

Together they form a vibrational spectrum - the “rainbow body” (vajra deha) through which

consciousness becomes flesh and returns to light.

Modern cymatics shows that sound produces geometry - mandalas, hexagons, spirals. Similarly, DNA's molecular symmetry reflects harmonic ratios found in music. In this way, the Tantric idea of nāda tattva (“principle of sound”) parallels biophysics: matter, energy, and consciousness are different octaves of vibration.

When you speak, chant, or even think, you’re emitting micro-vibrations that reprogram your cellular field. The body constantly rewrites itself through internal resonance - a living, self-singing code.
