The heart of Jyotish:
discovering your life-purpose
Jyotish is an ancient system designed to illuminate your unique life-purpose and help you move toward it with clarity.
Jyotish is not about forecasts, fortune-telling, predicting the future, for one simple reason: "Forecasts don't work"
This ancient system was reserved only for rulers: kings and rajas - because at that time only king was free to have an Individual Purpose. All other nation have to follow his or her purpose and will.
Now however the world is changing and everyone has access to this Science of Dharma, which helps you step into your fullest potential with confidence and clarity.
Through the light of Jyotish, your life-path becomes visible again.
Jyotish - The Science of Light
Jyotish is sometimes called Vedic Astrology, and it is a Sanskrit word which is translated as:
Jyoti (ज्योति) : light, luminosity, radiance, celestial light
-ṣa / -śa (ष / श) : science, knowledge, system of study
The literal translation of Jyotiṣa (ज्योतिष) in Sanskrit is:
“The Science of Light.”
In traditional texts, Jyotish is also called: "Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa” - The limb of the Veda dealing with light/time.
All ancient traditions of knowledge agree that Human Being is a Microcosm that is mirroring Macrocosm of the Universe. According to the Vedas: Universe is the Ocean of Sound. Everything are vibrations, including ourselves.
Each body emits a frequency of energy - physical, gravitational, magnetic.
The moment you take your first breath, your nervous system “records” the cosmic pattern around you.
It's not a fate, but your genetic potential:
-
what flows easily
-
what requires mastery
-
what repeats as patterns
-
what blossoms with time
-
what activates during specific life chapters
This is similar to how:
-
a seed contains a blueprint of the future tree
-
DNA contains patterns of potential
-
ocean tides respond to moon cycles
We are all made unique for particular purpose. Natal Chart is Map of Your Genetic Potential.
Ancient rishis saw that light carries memory.
Just as sunlight contains information that makes plants grow, planetary light carries patterns that shape:
-
your filter of reality (Moon)
-
your energy (Mars )
-
your ambitions (Sun)
-
things you don't care about (Ketu)
-
things you avoid ( Rahu)
Jyotish is the science of reading this information field.

Vedic science of light is
the most ancient Knowledge Base about the
Human Psychology
What are the Vedas ?
Composition of the Vedas dates back over 4,000 years or possible even earlier, which makes them as the oldest surviving literally expression in any given language, however for Indian pundits they serve as timeless revelation. Composed by ancient yogis and tanktricas, who are called rishis, translated like sage or poet. The Vedas, first preserved through an unbroken oral tradition, form the sacred foundation of Hinduism.
Many knowledge systems what we know and practice today trace their origin from the Vedas, such as: Yoga, Ayurveda and Jyotish. Vedic myths form the symbolical foundation of the Jyotish. Upanishads, which are philosophical texts written after the Vedas, aimed to explain the Vedas themselves, also formed what is called philosophy of Vedanta, which is philosophy of non-duality. This philosophy plays important role of understanding Jyotish as a science of holistic thinking. This way of thinking is formed during studying of other disciplines: Yoga and Ayurveda. And even all this three disciplines are interconnected, because they all deal with the phenomenon of the Human Being, where all the parts form the coherent whole.
Jyotish is one of the six other Vedangas, disciplines required to master the Vedas:
Shiksha - Sound & Pitch
Chandas - Meter & Rhythm
Vyākaraṇa - Sanskrit Grammar
Nirukta - Etymology & Meaning of Sanskrit Words
Jyotiṣa - Astronomy & Astrology
Kalpa - Ritual & Ethics
It is then said the following about the knowledge in Mundaka-Upanishad:
1.1.5.
The lower knowledge is the Rig-veda, Yagur-veda, Sâma-veda, Atharva-veda, Skshâ (phonetics), Kalpa (ceremonial), Vyâkarana (grammar), Nirukta (etymology), Khandas (metre), Gyotisha (astronomy) ;
1.1.6
but the higher knowledge is that by which the Indestructible (Brahman) is apprehended.
As we can see, no external knowledge can surpass the direct experience of unity and realization.
That is why Eastern Philosophy puts Self-Transformation over dogma.
I describe this philosophy in more details in my book, which you can start reading here.

purpose: Union of your sub- personalities under the same vision.
this vision is the path you walk.
natal chart is the roadmap.
Lunar Astrology: From Ancient Era till Modern Days
Jyotish is called Lunar Astrology, because it is using Sidereal Zodiac (Lunar month), instead of Tropical (Seasons). Another explanation is that the object of key study in this discipline is human psyche, which is symbolically represented by the Moon.
The main invention of Jyotishi of ancient era was the Nakshatra system - division of the sky into 27 Nakshatras (Lunar Mansions).
Chandra - The Moon God is said to have 27 wives, the daughters of Daksha.
Each wife is one nakshatra. Chandra spends one night with each wife, moving from one star-mansion to another
Each nakshatra has different qualities. Rig Veda has first mentions of nakshatras and Yajur Veda has detailed description of 27 nakshatras. This means the nakshatra system was formed thousands of years before the first zodiacs emerged in the Middle East and Europe.
Jyotish was formulated through such texts as:
Vedanga Jyotiṣa - astronomical description of 27 nakshatras
Suryva Sidhanta - describes sidereal zodiac & precession of equinoxes.
Parasara Hora Sastra - core text of predictive Jyotish: 300-600 CE
There are many text which were written since Parashara , but for some reason for more than thousand years astrology have chosen to go through predictive way. Maybe because we are living in the dark ages, and classical modern Jyotish as we knew it until today was predictive.
However, there are those who claim that it was not always like this .
"Mars Effect" - was the largest scientific research in history which was done by Michel Gauquelin, psychologist and statistician. Over around 45 years, he and his wife (Françoise Gauquelin) gathered large datasets: birth records, profession data, biographical information on thousands of people-especially “eminent professionals” (athletes, scientists, artists, etc.). Instead of testing traditional astrological ideas like sun-signs Gauquelin focused on whether planetary positions at birth correlated statistically with certain career successes or eminent achievements. His research found that all tested eminent athletes had their Mars either in 1st or 10th house more often than expected by chance.
Later on Kali Shankar, philosopher & social psychologist fused this data, Jungian idea of Individuation and ancient Jyotish. His genius re-invented astrology as it used to be in Vedic era: tool for discovering of the Life-Purpose. Moreover Kali Shankar says, that as every science Jyotish has to be improved with the latest knowledge about the world to be legitimated and useful in the present era.
So as quantum physics re-discovered Buddhist teachings, but from different perspective, Jyotish what we study and practice here based on scientific approach: statistical data and psychoanalysis fused with Vedic holistic approach towards Human Being.
How Jyotish is used to understand your Life-Purpose ?
Your Natal Chart is a symbolical map of your Psyche.
This is symbolism is based on concept of Houses ( Bhāvas in Sanskrit. ), Planets ( Grahas in Sanskrit ) and Zodiac Signs ( Rāśis ) which are territories ruled by various Grahas.
Placement of Planets in various signs and houses impacts the character of the Planet. Combination of Planets we call Yoga. Planets (not signs) are the main actors in Jyotish Astrology, because signs are just territories ruled by a planet. Each planet is symbolically seen as deity with unique character and story. There are many myths in the Hindu tradition from which these characters derive their lore, starting from the Vedas themselves. Curious reader may look upon "The Greatness of Saturn: A Therapeutic Myth" by Robert Svoboda.
In Jyotish we call yoga relationships formed between planets - conjunction, aspects... Yoga - means "Joint" in Sanskrit. All Jyotish is based on studying this web of the yogas.
By defining every yoga with it's unique characteristics and relationships with other actors - it is what we call a sub-personality in essence.
Union of all this actors under the same vision - it is what we call Purpose.
You will see that everything is interdependent, and one element is influencing another
Principle of Interdependence is very important for understanding how you natal chart works.
The principle of Interdependence highlights how each living thing within a natural system contributes to the health and balance of that system. You can find this principle anywhere starting from Taoism, Chinese Medicine, Yoga and Eastern Philosophy in general which highlights a Balance and Holistic Approach.
Holistic approach of Jyotish Astrology is that we unite different sub-personalities under same Vision, which we may call Individuation in terms of Jungian Psychology.
In analytical psychology - Individuation is the process during which the components of the immature psyche and the experiences integrated over time into a well-functioning whole.
The light of Jyotish gives us ability to see and understand this psychic forces ( individual in every case). We all have our strength and weakness, because genetically we are all unique.
Each of us also has a unique background - this is how our sub-personalities are formed.
Just as our psyche evolves as a whole, each of our sub-personalities is also at its own stage of evolution.
Instead of being torn by this psychic forces during your Individuation process, Jyotish is a tool which you can use to consciously integrate them.
Analysing natal chart we can understand which sub-personality is strong and which one is at it's germ stage, and what is blocking you from activating it.
Simply speaking Purpose is your Wholeness, and the Jyotish gives you a roadmap on this journey. It is your Dharma.
On the contrary - adharma - is the way of living against Purpose.
It's when we are not accepting ourselves, our characteristics, our genetic potential and thus our Purpose.
In terms of Jungian Psychology it is called - neurosis.
Adharma Will Cost You (c) Kali Shankar
We are all located at some position in this scale and it's okay. The awareness is the most important and understanding that we are in charge of our own lives.

What is the Rectification of Natal Chart ?
We can call a process of rectification a deep psychoanalytical session which is aimed to establish with maximum certainty your time of birth - and thus your Ascendant or Lagna in Sanskrit. From this point the process of construction of your natal chart begins and analyses comes after.
Simply speaking it is the session where I will ask you a lot of questions about your life experiences, feelings and motivation
We do this process to eliminate any error, which can influence your time of birth.
Example of this errors:
-
Birth tags mixed in the hospital
-
Parents especially with multiple kids - forgot or mixed the birth time in their memory
-
Geographical vs Political time zone difference
-
Summer Time, Winter Time correction
So as natal chart is time dependent - all this factors can lead to building a completely different chart, which will not reflect your personality, but someone else and if you follow this advice it even may do harm, rather than give any benefits.
During this session I will be asking you a lot of questions about your life, which should be reflected in your natal chart. In this way we can be sure that Natal Chart belongs to you.
Why the Rectification of Natal Chart is important ?
Rectification is the crucial process in the Jyotish Astrology and in interpretation of your Purpose.
It is important for Jyotishi to know he is doing good, rather than harm. Because if chart is not rectified it is impossible to give any correct advice.
And this process is what distinguishes Jyotish as a science, from forecasts and fortune tellings.
During this process it is important from you to answer the questions honestly, otherwise misinformation can lead to building a wrong chart. Which in the end will harm you.
Sometimes change in only few minutes will result in building a completely different Natal Chart.
For example, then you come to psychoanalytical session - analyst is building your chart (even if imaginary) of your psyche, when asking you questions - the process which takes years. So here we have the same methodology, however we already do have a chart, but we only need to establish that we have a correct one. This process takes on average 2 -4 hours, but sometimes might take longer.
Your life, experiences - must be reflected in your chart, once we established a correct one according to your time of birth, we can begin what we call interpretation: investigate your sub-personalities, purpose and so on.
What spheres of life does Jyotish astrology cover ?
Everything.
Concept of 12 Houses covers 12 different areas of life.
1. Personality, Character, Dharma
2. Income
3. Communication
4. Home
5. Art, Children
6. Health
7. Relationships
8. Sex
9. Education, Travel
10. Career & Business
11. Social Status
12. Spirituality
These are basic definitions. Houses have very deep symbolism, and any sphere of life may be connected with one house or another.
What is Yoga ?
Yoga - literally means joint in Sanskrit.
You know that the common definition of Yoga as asana practice is union of body and mind.
In context of Vedic Astrology we refer to yogas as combination of Planet.
Planet is actually not the correct term, because for example Sun and Moon are not the planets.
There is good term in Sanskrit - Graha, which refers to both planets and luminaries.
So combination of Grahas, we refer to as Yoga.
There are more than 200 various yogas in Jyotish Astrology, and they play crucial role in interpretation of Natal Chart. You will receive full description of each important yoga which you have in your Natal Chart.
Difference between Western Astrology and Jyotish Astrology
The most major difference is in reference system in use.
The Western Astrology is using Tropical Zodiac system, while Vedic Astrology using Sidereal Zodiac.
The Sidereal Zodiac and the Tropical Zodiac are two different systems used in astrology to map the position of celestial bodies in reference to observer - means to Earth.
Simply speaking Sidereal Zodiac ( Jyotish ) is using actual position of Constellations which you can observe visually in the night sky or by telescope.
If you can't read constellations - download app on your phone called Stellarium - point it on the sky - and you will see magic by yourself !
Tropical Zodiac ( Western ) is using spring equinox as a starting point, which shifts over the time, what's why Zodiac Signs are also shifting in Western Concept.
Starting Point (0° Aries):
-
In the Tropical Zodiac, 0° Aries always coincides with the spring equinox.
-
In the Sidereal Zodiac, 0° Aries corresponds to the actual position of the Aries constellation in the sky.
Precession of the Equinoxes:
-
The Tropical Zodiac does not account for the precession of the equinoxes (the slow backward shift in the Earth's rotation axis). Therefore, over time, the Tropical Zodiac "drifts" by about 1 degree every 72 years.
-
The Sidereal Zodiac, on the other hand, accounts for precession and maintains alignment with the actual stars.
What is the precession of the Equinoxes ?
The axis of rotation of our Earth shifts cyclically over time.
Now the axis of the Earth is aiming onto the Polaris. So Currently, Polaris is close to the north celestial pole, making it our current North Star. However, The Earth’s axis will be directed toward Vega in approximately 12,000 years from now. And this is called a precession.
The precession is very slow, at about 1 degree every 72 years. Over the course of about 26,000 years, the Earth completes one full cycle of precession, a period known as the Great Year or Platonic Year.

How is it actually reflected in my Natal Chart ?
The difference between Sidereal Zodiac Sign and Tropical Zodiac sign is called Ayanamsha. And at the moment of writing this text at 2025 A.D it is about 24 °
Please note - Tropical Zodiac has no connection to actual Zodiac Constellation.
So say, if you were born at 24th of July 1991 and you think you Sun located in Leo, it is actually located in Cancer. And same with all other grahas - they are shifted
approximately for one sign.
What is Upaya ?
Upaya - literally means correction in Sanskrit.
You can read more details about upayas here.
As Human Beings we strive for a state of Balance and Harmony.
In our body this process is called Homeostatis. It is self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability and balance, and thus Health.
Purpose is ultimate Balance. It is when we feel fulfilled, healthy hormones are produced and our body heals itself or even never get sick. Because the sickness is the state of imbalance.
We may not fullfill our Purpose for various reasons: unawareness, psychological blocks, procrastination, low self - esteem, drama, circumstances etc. And thus we encounter depression, apathy and decease. Also it is not possible to fulfil the Purpose over one day, because we are not living in a dream, but in the world of Matter. And Matter changes gradually over Time.
So the fulfilment of your Purpose requires Action.
Upaya is the correction which you may apply immediately. Now.
You may call it practice. Or Sadhana.
As you saw from Principle of Interdependence - there are many ways how each position or imbalance may be influenced and corrected. We call it Upaya and it is individual in every case.
And it is not necessary required for some position to be in state of imbalance - maybe you want to improve some sphere of your life - I evaluate your chart and it will be Upaya designed specifically for you and matter in question. Maybe you will like it so much, so you will be practicing it all your life or maybe over time you will be striving to improve your other characteristics. Because one of the goals of life - is evolution, and with Jyotish Astrology - sky is the limit - your chart will be unfolding for you during the course of your evolution.
Same thing in other words - Jyotish Astrology offers you very precise tools for your evolution and spiritual development.
